****START Start by turning on the mac Click on the Magnifying glass in the top right hand corner type in disk utility and open it In the Left Hand Corner, there will be a Bar with a bunch of icons, click on the top most icon In the Center of the screen there should be a bar labelled partition, click on that In the bottom left corner of the window there should be a plus button, click on the plus button and under Partition Layout There should be another box created that has the same name as the first partition except called 2. For example if the hard drive was called Macintosh HD10.7, the new partition will be called Macintosh HD10.7 2 Click on the new partition created, and in the right hand side of the window, type into the Name box, Linux Boot and hit enter. Click on the new Partition Created, and in the right hand side of the window, type into the size box, 30 and hit enter. Afterwards, in the bottom right side of the window, hit apply A window will pop up asking for confirmation, click on the partition box It will slowly create the partition, the progress bar will be in the bottom right hand corner. If the partition fails because of a sizing issue, go back into the size box and decrease by increments of 5 gb and hit enter until the partition is successful (Note: 10 gb is the minimum size for a linux os) If the partition fails because there was a problem with the disk, click on the First Aid box, in the bottom right corner of the window, click on repair disk and retry the partition. Once the partition is created, click on Macintosh HD 2 partition and then click on the minus sign. A window will pop up asking whether you want to remove the partition, click remove. Close out of disk utility and shut down the computer. Insert the corresponding boot disc based on the model number and turn on the computer holding the "c" key. It will take several minutes to boot up, don't touch anything until the next step Once loaded, you will see a welcome screen, Select English as the primary language and select install Ubuntu. The next screen will ask you to connect to a wireless network, connect and it will tell you once you are connected (Connection Established Bar), then click continue afterwards. The next screen check both boxes labelled "download updates while installing", and "install this third-party software" and hit continue. (Note: You need to do this step and be connected to a wireless network.) The next screen will give you a list of options for installation. Make sure you click the option "Install Ubuntu alongside Mac OS X." If this option is not available, redo the partition on Mac OS X and retry this step. Click "Install Now" A notification will come up asking whether you want to write the changes to the disk, click "Continue" Set the location to Los Angeles and click "Continue" Set the language to English (US) and click "Continue" Set "Your Name" as user, set the password as "user" also and hit continue. The window will switch to a progress bar, let it sit as the installation will take approx. 15-25 minuntes. Once finished, it will ask you to restart the computer, hold down the power key until the screen goes blank. Turn on the computer and log into apple OS, eject the boot disc by holding the eject key in the top right corner of the keyboard. Turn off the computer again and turn it on holding down the alt/option key. Several icons will pop up, use the arrow keys so that the icon labelled "Windows" is highlighted and hit enter. A purple screen will appear giving several options of loading ubuntu, wait until it dissapears. The ubuntu loading screen will appear and then the login screen will appear. Login to the account "user" with the password "user", once logged in, open firefox and check whether google drive, youtube, and khan academy will successfully function on the computer. Once all of this is done, shut off the comptuter and mark the computer as done. ****END
